Huey - that is some interesting project - could you tell us the history - where you got it, how much you paid, who owned it, what year, where are the wings? and so on?

It's a 1940 Aeronca 50F Chief. 3 of us purchased it for $2000. It was built here in Ohio and was converted from a Franklin 50 hp to a 65 Continental, and used as a demo. It was purchased and lived in Brooklyn New York until a friend bought it from the family. It was stored in their basement. We bought it from a friend who had it in his barn. He realized he would never restore it, not having the know how. I'm an A&P, and my partner is an IA. I've recovered several planes so this is up my alley. The only problem is there are no parts available. Fortunately we have the know how. The engine is in excellent condition . The Chief will mare a good bug smasher.

Oh, the wings are bare and ready to cover.

Wow, a true "barn-find"! I dreamed as a kid of finding an old Jenny, WACO, or Stearman sitting pristine under a tarp somewhere in the midwest and flying it back to Hawaii. I saw no problem with that at the time.

Great project! Anticipating more pictures as your restoration progresses.

I'm posting these pictures so people can see what a full scale airplane looks like. I have many pictures of the airframe to remind me where things go. the material used at that time was far inferior to what we have today. The workmanship was very lacking. Money was tight and they wanted to make it some how.

Speaking of "BARN FINDS" - the boys restoring the Mosquito Bomber at the Historic Hangar at Windsor, Ontario Airport, found two supercharged V-12 Rolls Royce Merlin 1,480 hp engines, that were never started, and still in the crates, in a barn on a farm in Northern Saskatchewan Province, Canada, for $10,000 each.
