DD, totally agree with you. From Aviation Week publication, thus far, the "Grizzly" is the only plane in the turboprop transport category to: be able to bank 120 degrees in a high & tight maneuvering turn, & about two years ago, following the footsteps of the Douglas XA2D Skyshark, lose its entire propeller assy in flight. Pilot declared emergency & landed safely. With the exception of France, no other European country is flying their A400's or even allowing it to overfly their airspace. The staga continues...-Sky

This is the DFC. Better late than never!

This photo from Barry shows that the model is still just like it was two years ago. When Captain Kaye was in training he was told to either shorten or change his name as the Germans were sending Polish people to death camps. Barry was born later and by that time the name had been changed back to Kucharski. The other brothers are named Kaye.

Update: Note the date of this post. Yesterday I got a call from Barry Kaye, one of Bob Kaye's brothers. He and a couple of other brothers just got this, still packed, from Bob's widow and its existence was a complete surprise to them. There is a DFC, Distinguished Flying Cross, associated with this plane but it has not been presented. Barry believes Bob was keeping it secret until the presentation was made so it would be a surprise to all concerned. As the model was still packed with the peanuts inside it is unknown if Bob even saw the painting that was included. Barry was highly complimentary of the model and plane and it's good to know their fate. I'll share any further developments.

Hi, I know a little history about your model and the pilot who flew it. On one of the missions flown over Japan the crew lost a motor and the pilot ( Andrew L Kaye ) talked it over with the crew and they decided to continue the mission . They flew over the target ( Oil fields ) and dropped their bombs. The plane turned and headed back to Guam and made it back to Midway. The model looks great in the pictures. I hope to see it someday.

That is incredible about the noise. I have a close bud who was an officer in our navy. His main function was tracking Russkie subs. He pulled Bermuda as a station. We could hear and ID a sub from Bermuda when it passed by Iceland. He always tells the story that when asked where he wanted to be stationed he said tropical island. He wound up in Bermuda for a few years, then Iceland. I shall have to ask him about hearing this bird. Marvelous tidbits of information.

The worst thing about the Tu95 and its contra-rotating, supersonic props was the noise. They are so loud that the Navy was able to track them over the Atlantic using the underwater hydrophone system for detecting submarines! If you want to see what they copied look at Boeing's first design for the B-52. It was a very similar turboprop.

Trust me anything Russian looks good from a distance up close it is not. They are great at stealing designs and technology. Look at the nose of this plane. What American plane does it resemble?

Russian equipment looks as if it can take lots of punishment, especially operating from where they are, but you're probably right about maintenance. Enthusiasts always comment on the sound:-)

Wonder if this system is prone to greater incidence of breakdown. More moving parts move chances of breakage!
