The Mig 17 (advanced from the Mig 15 of the Korean War - where the Mig 15 fought the F86 Sabre), had the easily visible difference of an added "ventral fin" under the rear fuselage (the Mig 15 had none), and the Mig 17 also had an added third "wing fence" on each wing.

It proved very effective into the 1960s, when pressed into subsonic dogfights over Vietnam, against much faster US planes such as the F-105 Thunderchief and F-4 Phantom, which were not as maneuverable at such lower-speed, short range engagements.

The Mig 17 was one of the most successful (introduced in 1952), "Transonic " jet fighters to come out before the advent of the "true supersonic" jet fighter types, such as the Mig 19 and the F-100 Super Sabre.

Creo - just watched the Sedaris monologue - quite enlightening - by the way, super build on your Sherman Tank - thanks for explaining all of the parts - the movie "Rare Export" has been removed from U-tube, although I did read the plot on Wiki.

There is also a Finnish movie called "Rare Exports". A rather twisted take on where Sinter Klaas comes from. Funny, bloody, creepy, and, did I mention, funny?

David Sedaris has a monologue called "Six To Eight Black Men" about this Christmas story. Really hilarious. You should be able to find it on YouTube.

Hey Luke - I've seen the pics of "Black Pete" too... Europe really does go all out in preserving their own celebrations of Yule & Winter Solstice, with their wild costumes and pageantry - especially that horrible looking "Krampus" - they don't want anything to do with our "Americanized" Santa and his Elf! Can't they make "Krampus" look any more horrible with that long tongue??

In Holland, Saint Peter has a sidekick named "Black Peter" who carries a bag and puts the bad children inside.

Sinter Klaas and his sidekick "Krampus", with his handful of slender stick "switches" used for spanking bad children - the real reason for the lyrics of the song : "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" "Gonna find out who's naughty or nice", "He knows if you've been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake..."

To take enough care and attention to ensure that the chrome outline and black insignias matches up takes a lot of work and it shows. Not an easy thing to do. The "Hammer and Sickle" details alone must have been a challenge in itself.

Richard, that model of the -17 looks great. From what you just said about the wings, sounds like a lot of research went into this build. Great camouflage scheme.

Thanks Skye - you are now inspiring me to look up the differece, even though I trust you are correct.

That's a beautiful shot Richard. I often hear of the weather going on here in the States, but nothing out of Canada. Thanks for providing us with a glimpse of what you go through. I would guess a Mk. IX Spitfire, and a Mk. II Hurricane.

I took these pics of the frozen Hurricane and Spitfire in their wintery sarcophagus, and tested the limits of my new (13 yr old) Digital Camera.

I braved the freezing cold first thing this morning, of -2 deg F (-19 deg C), and trudged through 7" of compacted snow, down from the 11" and 3" snowfalls, walking the dog in Jackson Park, Windsor, Ontario (same locale as Detroit, Michigan).

The mighty Mikoyan-Gurevich MIG 17 - the Russian high sub-sonic swept wing jet fighter, advanced from the MIG 15 of the Korean War. The wing has a "sickle sweep" compound shape, with a 45 degree angle near the fuselage, and a 42 degree angle for the outboard part of the wings.

Home-made decals of Russian "Star" and "Hammer and Sickle" insignias are made from Black and Chrome (outlline border) color, adhesive-backed (Peel n' Stick), Trim Sheets from Top Flite.
