dd, can you just sand and dope the filled in balsa or does it need the tissue added for a good affect?

I marked the location of the exhausts with a pin and it's now headed to the paint shop.

The instructions have been the same as long as I can remember, carve and sand to shape. It's fairly easy but slow is the best approach. I glued the sanded to shape guns onto the wing with Testors and the CA with kicker. The final step was to lay in some filler where they join the wing and then a couple of coats of dope on them.

I start with a new blade for this stuff. Fortunately it's very good wood.

When the covering with silkspan was complete I brushed on two coats of clear nitrate dope and allowed it to dry overnight. The next day I sanded it with 320 wet/dry sandpaper and put on three more coats. The day after it was all sanded again and this is after 5 coats of dope. Running your fingers over the surface is the best way to insure it's all smooth, at least for me cause these old eyes don't see small things easily. The doping process leaves some rough edges on the wings and tail which you can definitely feel. This is after 5 coats of dope.

Not having spent much time in the desert SW, I am enthralled with the spring flowers and colors. I must get down there. BTW: Today I have a Winter Storm Warning out for my area with 2 - 6 inches of SNOW possible. Damn that Global Warming!!

does Christmas cactus grow in the wild there?

The 80 degree plus weather dries the silkspan quickly outside and these are the final pieces. It will now get several coats of clear nitrate dope before painting.

I put a bead of Testors wood cement around the edges of the wings to seal the covering followed by a light sanding.

This one is growing wild with some oleanders in what at one time was an enclosed garden space. I'll get some photos of others so you can get an idea of their size. They also bloom orange.
