Gumby thinks this will look "much more" better! |

Not happy with the brass cylinders Gumby redid them in a copper motif. A shade of copper entitled worn penny! |

John O - those copper coated cylinders and cooling fins on that ABC Wasp non-rotary, piston , air cooled radial (one of the first), are really going to bring life to that Baboon!! |

Rayl, Thanks. Bit by bit the component parts of this radial are falling into place. I venture to say that it probably will have 300 plus components upon completion. I am at 255 or so now with quite a bit of work before me. |

The components are coming together. |

The Gumster adds a bit of color. |

Crank case must be sanded to shape. |

And now there are seven pseudo cylinders. |

Aligned on a small dowel, the cylinder sandwiches are wood glued together. |

The construction of the Baboon was initiated this day. We wish to take advantage of the multitude of laser cut balsa and plywood disks that are supplied in this short kit. This is a bare bones kit without instructions. Baboon fabrication should reawaken that part of my noodle programmed for problem solving, specifically the area dedicated to model fabrication. I was drawn to this particular kit because of the seven cylinder radial engine. The kit engine does not mimic the real Baboon power plant. I find the design of the kit engine aesthetically pleasing and as such, we will not construct an engine that attempts to duplicate the "real thing!" After finally understanding the order of disk stacking, Gumby and I dry assembled two cylinders this day. Two down, five more to go! |

Fortunately there is this complete model build link to guide you along.:-) https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?481311-Another-Rake-rare-bird-FK-24-Baboon |

BP guy, I had great success making plastic disks for my last monster "Ogre". I sliced them from sheet styrene using a hole punch fastened in a drill pres. I cut quite a few as Ogre has a V 12 power plant. |

That's a great way to build radial. I tried plastic discs without much success and metal washers which turned out an engine that would have needed a JATO pack to get off the ground. Aren't you glad it's only seven cylinders? |

Hey John - Really looking forward to seeing how that engine "stacks up"! I have a 28" Stearman kit by Thomas Herr (Sig-Herr) HRRK-116 with the 7 cylinder radial of 12 balsa stacked discs for each cylinder, which was the reason I bought it. I will just sit back and watch how you build and detail your stacked engine. |
