Hi Don - Just got the tail section done and almost got the wings done - then I needed a diversion - got hooked on the "Canuck" float plane - I spent most of my time this summer flying and smashing up and repairing free flight rubber models ... |

Nice video , What happened with the S.I.G biplane you were building . |

All of the float formers are now "double white glued" into place and allowed to dry. |

The float formers are all notched and sized using a small piece of 1/16" square stringer, and are ready to glue to the open keel sides of the float. |

All of the crossmember planks are sandwiched snugly on each side of each, finished side float former, and this holds everything very securely, to provide a solid surface, of the open bare side (no formers) of the keels. This setup is extremely handy when gluing down the side formers, and pushing down on them and positioning them. It also provides a very solid base when gluing on the stringers after the formers have dried. |

The crossmember planks are then slipped in UNDER the top and bottom center keels, with the crossmember plank ends sitting ON TOP of the rails, where they are pinned in place. The Rails are just high enough to raise the side edge of the finished former side, just above the building board. |

The Rails are 1/4" X 1/2" X 12" hard stick balsa, and the Crossmembers are 1/16" X 3/8" X 3" balsa planks. The crossmembers do not slide, but are pinned down to the rails, snugly sandwiching and holding each former. |

The Float lies sideways in the jig, with the top "flat" of the float, which is formed by the top flat edge of the formers and the top of the upper center Keel, - that flat is sitting flush to the nearest rail. |

I knew I had to make a jig/assembly fixture to securely hold the half-finished float, in order to glue the Float's "other side", half-formers and stringers. This is the little micro-jig setup I made, that uses the same principle as the larger jigs. |

BUILDING THE FLOATS - It was difficult cutting and getting the printwood parts right. All of the float formers sat crooked when standing on the float keels, because I cut them out crooked with the exacto knife - I had to sand them all to a right angle perpendicular edge mating surface. And all of my 10 second Cyano Acrylate "CA" glue bottles were either rock hard in the bottle, or had lost all of their potency. Luckily, I had one bottle of CA super glue from Dolarama - but it was 30 second glue, not 10 second glue - I found out the hard way ... |

On Saturday October 14, there will be a "MODEL SHOW", open to everyone, inside the Historic Hangar at Windsor Airport, from 10 am to 3pm, open to all categories of models - airplanes, ships, cars, anything. It's your chance to see some great models, or show off your favorite models, and, if you want, enter your best models into the different categories, each with a prize. Inside the Historic Hangar you can talk to the volunteers who are tirelessly working to restore the Lancaster and Mosquito bombers. There is also a big BBQ with hotdogs and hamburgs for lunch. So bring the kids and have some fun at the Canadian Historical Aircraft Association’s third annual "MODEL SHOW" at the Historic Hangar at Windsor Airport on Saturday October 14, from 10 am to 3 pm, open to all models, and open to everyone. Visit CH2a.ca for details. |

PARTS CUT OUT - I put in a new #11 Exacto blade knife and cut out all of the parts from the "Printwood" balsa sheets (first time). I find that you can even cut against the grain with a sharp blade, a steel ruler, and a "cutting mat". I am still working on the sizing up of all of the notches, and test fitting with a small piece of 1/16" square balsa stringer, to snugly accept the 1/16" square balsa stringers, as close as I can. |

FLEET CANUCK PLAN - here is a pic of the plan - it has FLOATS. The plan actually looks very good - downthrust for the noseblock, positive incidence on the wing, slight negative incidence on the stab, but no incidence on the floats as compared to the fuse datum. I have to make a removable nose block as per the supplied extra sheet of instructions, that came with the kit. There is no removable nose block on the original plan. |

Although they were well built, strong performers, AND versatile - skis or floats - the post WW2 period had too many surplus ex-military A/C for sale, there was not enough interest in the civilian population for luxury items, and "training" aircraft were not in demand, as thousands of ex-military pilots were out of work and they were already trained to fly ... |

Fleet "CANUCK" - Canada's GEM of the North. 225 Fleet CANUCKS were built by two manufacturers during its 13 year production run - 1946-1958 - with the majority of them built by "Fleet" from 1945 to 1947. |
