To a pilot, the rigging wire was life and death. Cables stretch with time, fatigue, and snap. Wire tension controls wing alignment, incidence angle, and rigidity. The “Rigger” was an important member of the flight crew. Wire length and tension is influenced by change in temperature. All of the former variables influence lift, maneuverability. and flight. In the “Fog of war” I wonder how diligently the issue of proper cable tensioning was addressed. How many flight mishaps occurred to lack of attention to cable tension. |
