Before the surgery I was working on a Nieuport II that I designed for electric and have most of it built. Because of my knee, covering will have to wait a couple of weeks. So while I am waiting I decided to start on my Guillows Nieuport. I bought this kit some time ago and it came with heavy laser cut wood. This was not going to work for freeflight so I contacted Guillows and they sent out replacement wood that is the same quality that is in my Zero kit. The old wood will be used for a practice model. The laser cutting was great and all the parts lined up perfect. There was no need to adjust any of the notches except one on the bottom that is way off. Also Guillows missed one rib on the smaller wing when designing the parts, so I let them know and they will correct it. I really like these laser cut kits, I think they are worth the money. They are easy to build and go together fast. As a matter of fact I built another top wing from the heavy laser cut wood and I had it done in 5 minutes using CA. You can also see how much cleaner a white glue build is compared to CA> Any way I built this per the plans with a couple of mods. The landing gear will use a bungee system to assist with landing and not break off when hitting the ground. The motor peg was moved one former forward, and the cowl is removable just in case I want to convert to electric. The build was constructed from Elmers white glue and needs a final sanding before covering. I still have to order tissue and some other building supplies. So far as shown it weighs 46 grams. The wing made with the original heavy wood came in at 18 grams, the replacement wing from Guillows came in at 11 grams. While I am waiting for the tissue to arrive, I will build this kit that a fellow club member gave me, it is a 13 inch Nieuport from Comet. |
