edtherenderman | Aero-Werkes AW 11601 - Hannover CL IIIa | Build | 23-Mar-20 10:40 | | Views : 400 | Been a trying time over the last few weeks. Working from home and social isolation has been challenging. But fortunetly, my family, friends and myself are healthy. I hope all the same for you! I have had some time (more time actually) to do some 3D printing. Here is the 3D print job for an 1/16 scale ARGUS (Opel) III six cylinder engine used in the Hannover CIIIa and serveral other German aircraft during WWI. I modeled this is Blender, then using my print pipeline, was able to print it out in five separate print jobs. Most of these only took 4 - 6 hours to print. Print time is proportial to the number of layers (hight in Z Axis) of the print, not the number of parts. I have found there tends to have more issues with lots of parts on one print, so I tend to keep the numbers smaller and do more prints. It took two weekends and a week of evenings to model the entire engine. However, now that I have it, I can print it in any scale I want down to about 1/24. Any smaller than that and I run into issues with parts being too small and would need to rework the model. |
edtherenderman | Aero-Werkes AW 11601 - Hannover CL IIIa | Build | 02-Mar-20 08:46 | | Views : 336 | Not a lot of building going on right now. Was down with the flu last week (nope, not Corvid-19 although I live just north of Kirkland, WA!). I did spend a good bit of time refining the pipeline for using the laser etcher and found a couple of good shortcuts. I’m planning on putting together a how-to for those who are interested. Anyway, here is a picture of the upper and lower wings for the Hannover. The center section of the upper wing was sheeted in the original a/c and contained an aux fuel tank and radiator. I’m going to 3D model and print those parts. I’ve also spend a week (prior to the flu) modeling the interior details so I can print them. I still need to model the engine. Once I get all the parts done, I’ll fit them to the fuse before sheeting. Finally, I spent some time sheeting, filling and sanding the vertical fin and lower horz stab (no pictures yet). These were integral parts of the original a/c fuse, so wanted to get them sheeted before mounting them and sheeting the fuse. |

edtherenderman | Aero-Werkes AW 11601 - Hannover CL IIIa | Build | 10-Feb-20 08:50 | | Views : 378 | Also rough formed the empennage. The Hannover is unique having two horizontal stabilizers. The idea was that it would improve Gunner/observers arch of fire since the stab could be smaller. I think it makes a cool looking aircraft! |
edtherenderman | Aero-Werkes AW 11601 - Hannover CL IIIa | Build | 10-Feb-20 08:48 | | Views : 420 | Fuse together. Standard box build technique: Build both sides on the plans, glue the tail post, tape the first former on, than carefully glue in the top and bottom formers. This is going to be a big airplane. It’s 1/16 scale so around 30” wingspan. I was going to downscale it to 1/20, but because I was also dealing with the Laser Etcher, I decided to go with the larger scale. |
edtherenderman | Aero-Werkes AW 11601 - Hannover CL IIIa | Build | 10-Feb-20 08:43 | | Views : 389 | Fuse parts cut! It took about 1.5 hours to cut the parts. With a more powerful laser, the time would go way down since it takes 6 passes for each part. The more time consuming part is converting the drawing into a file the etcher can use! If anyone is interested in this method, let me know. I’m happy to talk about my pipeline. I was able to cut all the parts for the airplane on one 1/16 x 6 x 36 sheet of balsa, including twice as many wing ribs as outlined in the plan. I was cutting for a good 8 hours, but once I was comfortable that I wasn’t going to catch anything on fire, I was able to do other work while the cutting happed. It’s still a good idea to keep your eye on it though! |
edtherenderman | Aero-Werkes AW 11601 - Hannover CL IIIa | Build | 10-Feb-20 08:38 | | Views : 463 | Here is the laser cutting the second part. This is 1/16 sheet, 6” wide. I realize this picture may be a bit misleading. The little hose with the fitting on the end looks like the source of the laser. It’s actually an airbrush hose used to blow low pressure air on the work surface. The air keeps the smoke from diffusing the laser, fogging up the laser lens, and puts out any small sparks that may end in a burned up piece of balsa and small garage fire! |
edtherenderman | Aero-Werkes AW 11601 - Hannover CL IIIa | Build | 10-Feb-20 08:34 | | Views : 465 | Started work this weekend on the Aero-Werkes Hannover CL IIIa. I’m scratch building it from plans I found on Outerzone (https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=1156). This is my first attempt at using a $250 2D Laser Etcher/Cutter that I got off of Amazon to cut the balsa parts. Here is my rig. edtherenderman | Easy Built Taube | Build | 04-Feb-20 08:33 | | Views : 960 | Overall, I’m very pleased with this build. Learned a lot, and it was challenging in ways I didn’t expect. Lots of problem solving! Now, what to build next! I think I’m going to go with my original plan and build a 1/16 scale Hannover CIII. However, I just got a vintage Guillows BF109 (kit 401) still in its original shrink wrap that is calling my name! Also, just downloaded a plan for a DH Mosquito from Outerzone that looks like a fun build! Oh so many options! |
