SteveM | Guillows Series 300 - Fiesler Storch | Build | 03-Oct-11 23:54 | | Views : 1081 | The result of a few hours of casual building this evening. The Weldbond glue grabs quickly and is dry enough to handle the parts in about 15 minutes or so. The side keels are pretty neat in this SRK. In the kit you glue the two parts of each keel half into the formers one at a time, gluing them together on the fuselage. But with the SRK they are one piece of wood that has be scored about halfway through at the joint between the two parts so that it easily bends as needed. The part "D6" in the center of the horizontal stabilizer was too small and I had to take a minute or two to make a new one. It was almost like the part was drawn too small without the kerf of the laser being taken into account. Other then that, everything has had a fantastic fit. |
SteveM | Guillows Series 300 - Fiesler Storch | Build | 03-Oct-11 23:48 | | Views : 854 | If I am able to stick with it and complete this Storch it'll by my entry for the 2011 "G" challenge. It's an SRK from DPCM so no kits will be harmed in the building of this model. See Jerry Campbell's Storch photos if you want to see what is provided in the SRK. The quality of the wood is nice, light yet strong, and the laser cutting makes it all fall together quickly, though the sheets that the formers were in need a little extra knife work to free the parts. |

SteveM | Dumas Kit #1815,DeHavilland DH89 Dragon Rapide | Build | 16-Mar-11 22:20 | | Views : 1692 | The small test piece has three light coats, enough to look very good on the side with primer, but the side I didn't prime could use another coat or two like I had to do with the unprimed nacelle. Looks like a keeper to me. |
SteveM | Dumas Kit #1815,DeHavilland DH89 Dragon Rapide | Build | 16-Mar-11 22:17 | | Views : 1641 | I mentioned the problem I had with this primer to a friend and he said it was either too cold or I didn't shake the can enough. It was above the minimum reccomended temperature so I shook the can till my arm was tired and tried again. As you can see, the effort was worth it. |
SteveM | Dumas Kit #1815,DeHavilland DH89 Dragon Rapide | Build | 16-Mar-11 22:15 | | Views : 1508 | The LHS wanted $8 for a can of Krylon primer so I got this can of Rust-Oleum engine primer from the home improvement store for $5.50. As you can see, the first test piece was a disaster. |
SteveM | Dumas Kit #1815,DeHavilland DH89 Dragon Rapide | Build | 16-Mar-11 22:13 | | Views : 1571 | I took a scrap of silver SoLite to the LHS and found the best color match that I could. Later I realized it was for polycarbonate RC car shells, but it didn't hurt the extra engine nacelle I tested it on, just took a lot of coats to get good color. |
