After cutting the two plastic sides, I hollowed out the side of the engine block for the gears and used a black marking pen to darken the interior

Making the two remaining sides, I traced the outline of the engine onto additional card stock. I also allowed for extra plastic card along the bottom for the legs of the engine

I then bent the card along the score line to form a smooth side. Note the small ridge along the fold line.
