I think all is working again now. Please leave a comment on a photo somewhere if something you need is not working still.

I got the rudder part of the fin/rudder sanded but it needs to be sanded to shape from top to bottom before attaching. The weather has been downright nasty but has started back to normal so it's safe to go outside again. That's essential because lots of doping is ahead.

Fitting a canopy is crucial to the overall appearance of a model. This one is a bit unusual in that the bottom of the front framing is fairly flat and at the rear it has to conform to a circular shape to blend with the spine. After cutting out the wood for the cockpit I added 3/32" strips along the sides. I will add additional wood behind the opening to support the canopy when attaching it. Adjustments are expected as it all goes together.

Masking tape pressed firmly against the canopy shows where the molding is and a sharpie defines it which makes it much easier to cut correctly. This works for all canopies but it's especially important to get it right on an OOP kit.

Scale wheels for balsa models of planes made after WW1 are impossible to find unless you're building a Cub so I look for scale-like wheels. The big wheel is the standard Guillows 1 3/4" and will not be used as a 1 1/2" size is called for and they're on the way from the UK. The nose wheel is 1.25", a lightweight design with a nylon hub from China. You can find more wheels on Ebay by searching for "R/C aircraft wheels". 3 of the 1.25" wheels were just over $8. The balsa "tanks" were carved for the F-80 and may or may not be used here.

Next is to sand the fin/rudder to airfoil and install it.

The planned colors are similar to this model but without the garish tanks. It will have a full landing gear.

The low winter morning sun shining through the front window briefly adds a bit of light to the work area where the third filler app is on.

I finally was able to get the fairings sanded so the next area for filler is the sections made with the 1/16" stringers, top and bottom.

For Julnik who asked about a canopy. A lot of work will be required before it's actually glued in place!

I thinned the filler and used a palette knife to apply it to the wings. It sanded smooth fairly easily so I did the same thing on the jet intake/fairing areas. This first application is to smooth all the sections together and the top and bottom sections will get it next. When all 3 sections are done the whole thing will get an application of filler. This will dry overnight until about 11 tomorrow morning when it should be warm enough to go outside.
