mbloom | 15-Jul-13 16:05 | Long time member but just getting back into building my static display Series 400 Guillows P-51. I noticed your cuffed prop blades and was wondering if you carved them or bought them. I'm having trouble carving them out of balsa blocks or sheets, or even a basswood block. But I can't find 1/16 scale wood plastic blades for sale. First, I don't know how thick to make these blades. The plans and some other drawings I've seen suggest they are much thicker than they appear in in your photo as well as pictures of the real thing. Then there's the twist or warp shape. Maybe I just need to keep trying and eventually I'll come up with a shape I'm happy with. I'd appreciate knowing how you approached this ... thanks! |
David Duckett | 15-Jul-13 16:56 | Check the "how to" link to the left of the photo for one way to make prop blades. I suggest you buy a plastic model of the P-51 to see how the blades are actually shaped rather than using the plans or photos for reference. I carve all prop blades from balsa. |
mbloom | 17-Jul-13 11:56 | Thanks, David. In the prop blades "how to", please clarify what you mean by "Sand the blank to the outline of the colored center and cover the hub end with masking tape". Does the outline refer to the prop shape in the kit's plans? |
David Duckett | 17-Jul-13 12:13 | Yes. |
