Wow superb! (need a couple of theses for my Q6 - :-)

What is the size front to back? Just out of interest.
edtherenderman21-Jun-21 10:45
Thanks! It's 2.831 inches from the front of the hub to the carb. Now that I have the modeled this in 3D, I can basically print it to any scale reasonable scale. BTW, this is a Daimler-Mercedes D.IVa engine.

looks promising! does it run? lol.

It's all "show" and no "go"! I do like modeling engines in 3D though. I did a couple of fantasy engines here: http://www.edcicka.com/engines_sketch.html and you have seen the one's I've created for my models on this site.

Love the realism Ed! I wish I had the know-how, I'd build two Gypsy Queen straight six's for my Q6!

Super cool, very nice detail. This is something i have never done modeled in 3D.

Very good! What 3D printer do you use?

Very cool!

I have two 3D printers. The one I used for the engine is a Kudo3D Bean https://www.kudo3d.com/bean-3d-printer/ I got into this as a Kickstarter in 2018. It's a good printer, but there may be better on the market now. A lot changes happen with this technology in short periods of time! I use a white resin to print and usually use a 50micron setting between layers, which give amazing detail. My other printer is a Prusa i3 MK3S+. I use this for items that don't need a much detail, like the cockpit cover/combing or engine cover panels. I used to print in ABS so I could smooth it with Acetone, but have discovered a new filament called PolySmooth that you can smooth with isopropyl alcohol. Still experimenting with this, but so far the result look good. Hope this wasn't TMI!

Thank you - a friend prints my stuff with a Prusa i3 Mark 3. Seems to struggle with fine threads hanging off which need to be removed. Maybe this filament you mentioned might help.

May be worth a try. It's amazing the wide range in quality and printing characteristics of these filaments. Even from brand to brand. I've gotten the same type of filament from different brands that definitely doesn't print with the same fidelity between them. The Prusa is a benchmark printer, one of the best at the price range, so it very well could be the filament brand, or printer configurations.

@Bobgood, If I 3D modeled a de Havilland Gipsy Queen engine for you would you be interested? I was looking at pictures of it on line and seems pretty straight forward. How much detail would depend on how large it is. I think it would be a fun project, and I like having the 3D models because I can use them for other aircraft. I've eyed a de Havilland Comet race aircraft for some time, which used a modified version of this engine!

Going around the house to come in the front door.
