BriandKilby | 09-May-14 07:44 | where did the phantom get the mig kills, bill? |
BillParker | 09-May-14 09:15 | In my imagination, probably, Brian... The 111th Reconnaissance Squadron (111 RS) is a unit of the Texas Air National Guard 147th Reconnaissance Wing located at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base, Houston, Texas. The 111th is equipped with the MQ-1B Predator unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
The squadron is a descendant organization of the World War I 111th Aero Squadron, established on 14 August 1917. It was reformed on 29 June 1923, as the 111th Observation Squadron, and is one of the 29 original National Guard Observation Squadrons of the United States Army National Guard formed before World War II.
The 111th Reconnaissance Squadron is the oldest unit of the Texas Air National Guard, with over 95 years of service to the State of Texas and the United States. In 1982, the F-101s were retired and ADTAC re-equipped the 111th with the McDonnell F-4C Phantom II and continued its air defense mission. Most of the F-4Cs the squadron received were Vietnam War veteran aircraft. In November 1986, the F-4Cs were replaced by later-model F-4Ds. So, no MIG kills for this pig, but sometimes you just gotta make stuff up!

jgood | 09-May-14 11:21 | Very nice, Bill. |
poppy | 11-May-14 05:15 | Both are very well done. I especially like the Texas ANG colors. |
BillParker | 11-May-14 10:36 | Thanx for the kind words, guys! Poppy, I actually got to see the 111th planes painted somewhat like this back in the day at the Ellington Airshow, an annual shindig we have here... The following year they were painted gray, then not to many years later, they handed out F-16's and lost all their back seaters. For a long time, we'd play golf down there at the Pasedena Municiple Golf Course, (used to be the officer's course right next to the airbase) and watch them shoot approaches. (along with the NASA T-38's, as Space Center Houston is just on the other side of Ellington Field) Free airshow with your greenfee... Now the 111th is the proud owners of 2 Predator Drones, and no fighters at all... |
