The wing sections are glued together and the spars are then glued in place setting the dihedral. Solid wing tips complete the basic structure. It's quite strong. |

Sweet. Should be strong...almost solid wood! |

Is this model so much to scale, that the real plane would have that many ribs? |

The Lancaster was a beast in its day! There was very much respect for it!Just gorgeous |

Thanks, all. Although I could identify the plane, there's really nothing like building one to fully appreciate its lines and what it looks like from all angles. |

Looks quite "beefy".

David, it's hard to tell, but did you laminate balsa wood together for your wing tips, or are they one solid piece of balsa bolck? |
David Duckett | 09-Jan-13 08:29 |
They're laminated. See the red line on the tip? I cut a piece of 3/32" stock for the wingtip and sand the outline to shape. Then I color the perimeter with a colored marker so that when adding the laminations you can see the outline and sand them to match the colored outline. A solid block will work just as well but I have a tendency to sand too much away without a good reference. |

Thanks for the info David. I agree, it would be easier to sand to shape by laminating pieces together rather than a balsa block. I will use your method. Thanks again. :) |
