John M Oshust | 04-Feb-15 17:13 | Without the help of my little friend, I was not able to fully accomplish today’s fabrication goal. I did manage to construct and install an interrupter gear mechanism that will permit the Vickers to fire through a four bladed air screw. This mechanism synchronizes engine/airscrew rotation with Vickers discharge. Pictured here you can see how the linkage enters into the engine compartment. |
Don C | 05-Feb-15 00:37 | Hope it works as well as it looks. |
John M Oshust | 05-Feb-15 06:47 | Don C, The Vickers was an "aftermarket armament add on" to the BE. Hence the external synchronizing mechanism. The original armament consisted of one, or two, upper wing mounted, Lewis guns. The BE was primarily a home defense aircraft. |
Don C | 05-Feb-15 14:22 | I always have liked the look of the Lewis on the upper wing, but wonder how many guys fell out trying to change the drum. |
John M Oshust | 05-Feb-15 14:56 | Don, I hear you as I also like their look. Only 40 rounds in the drum so changing them on the go was a necessity. Ogre will have two mounted on the upper wing. Hopefully they will lower for refill like the real thing. Some BE aircraft had a Lewis mounted pointing vertically for belly shots on dirigibles, balloons etc. if my memory is correct I have made a Lewis before, I think, maybe, must look. Getting to the point were I cannot trust the microchip. Now what type of biplane am I building now??? |
