this is a question for dd. i know you filled in all your skyraider with balsa, but maybe you can answer this. it tells you to fill in a portion of the nose with balsa, is that for weight for flying or something else?
David Duckett21-Mar-13 08:50
I think it's to make it easier to shape and cover.

It also gives you a stronger place to hold when winding the prop so you don't put your fingers through the tissue. (for rubber powered flight)

i think it might be that peregrin, thanks for the tidbit.

another guestion for dd, what size balsa should i use for planking and does that come in stringers or do you have to get it in individual or something else? thankyou dd.

I use different thicknesses but I seem to like 3/16" stock best because it allows lots of room for carving and sanding. There are many sizes of strip balsa available but it would be better, and cheaper, to buy whole sheets and cut what you need from them. I use good stuff, not too soft but definitely not too hard and it's better to have all the infill done with the same density of wood.

thanks dd, i started filling in with 1/8" balsa under nose and air scoop, what they said to do, maybe i'll try do a total planking on some future model.
