VP46 | 21-Apr-08 19:19 | The stab - Laminated is cool! |
jgood | 21-Apr-08 19:41 | Nicely done! How did you do this? Did you make formers and bend around those, or just over the plans, around pins? |
Barnstormer | 21-Apr-08 20:53 | Yes well done, this is something I would like to learn to do. This looks very good. |
VP46 | 21-Apr-08 21:23 | I cut out a form from Masonite (the brown wood like substance the stab is sitting on in this picture). The cut 4 strips of 1/32nd width Balsa 1/8th in wide, soaked them in hot water, then Lathered in Yellow wood glue and bent the strips slowly around the form. To hold on the form you can use scotch tape or if you run out of tape ;) you can do what I did use nails to hold the strips to the form.
This was my first shot at Laminating hoops and while it seems a daunting task if you have a good teacher (Konrad) it is really quite simple and as Konrad will attest WELL WORTH IT in terms of strength and (if you sand them thinner) in terms of weight. They are VERY VERY strong. |
VP46 | 21-Apr-08 21:29 | I should mention that I tried this with 1/16 balsa and failed miserably....but once I tried with the 1/32 using Korad's expert technique (he is a very skilled builder) it worked on my first try on the rudder and my second try on the Stab - the stab took two because in my first attempt I used strips that were too short. I am hook on laminiations and now look at other items where I can apply this new (to Me) building method. |
