Do you mill your own stringers? If so what wood do you use?

Going to be a big boy!

yes we cut those on the table saw. 5/8" by 1/4" by 8 feet... Pine plywood... We made about 30 of em just to get started with. There'll be lots more. Fuse photos shortly...

very nice indead! is this one of your pedistal planes, bill?

I was wondering how you kept the grain from running out. Plywood does the trick all right
BillParker02-Oct-13 17:05
Plywood is also the least expensive option for material. I can buy 5/8" trim in pine or poplar, but even in pine it's like a buck a foot. (1 dollar US for you outta towners...) and that makes the stringers for the wing too high at 30 foot... And the fuse has 7 longerons per side, at 8 foot each... That's 112 feet... Sheesh... So the plywood we're currently buying is at 20 dollars per sheet, (4 by 8 feet) and so far on this plane I've used a sheet and a quarter... So 25 bucks for the wood. I've basically got all the parts made, so probably 30 dollars per aircraft will be reasonably close to the truth... Just started the drafting on the F6F... Big fun in Texas!

Oh, and I forgot... Who might be interested in building detailed cockpits for these projects? I'd send you the "box" already properly sized to fit into the hole. And you could do whatever you want to it... Any takers?

You think about buying spruce 2x4's and running through the table saw and making the stringers?
frwyflyer02-Oct-13 19:17
I sometimes use spruce 2 X 3's from Lowe's. Sort through the pile and get some tight grained ones. They're around $2 each
