I bid farewell to my early morning building companions with a breakfast "Luau".

We are birders on the east coast. What is the bird in the foreground with the red head?

I could just see this on my patio with all my cats plastered against the windows meowing to be let out.

jdaawa. Truthfully, I don't know. Should've asked. Next time.

We are trying to Id the red headed bird in the foreground, but before I do, was this in Hawaii? We think it's a Red-Crested Cardinal. It is not native it was introduced in the 1930s. (There are a pair of Northern Cardinal in the upper right of the picture, they ware also introduced to Hawaii.) If you were not in Hawaii....Ive got one other wild guess.

Yes, this was in Hawaii. Maui to be exact, on the SW side of the island. This is the lee side of volcano Haleacala so annual rainfall averages only "9-11" annually. Thanks fot the I.D. for this was the family's favorite, albiet most elusive, visitor. What was the wild guess, anyway?

The wild guess was a Red-Cowled Cardinal. It is from Brazil but my sources don't indicate that it occurs in Hawaii. The Red-Crested cardinal has a top-knot, the Red-Cowled cardinal does not. Google both names and you should get some pictures. We searched all of our field guides and after I posted the comment I remembered your travel kit picture and looked to see that you were going to Hawaii. I spent a week on R&R in Hawaii back in the 60's.
