SteveM | 03-Jan-08 20:08 | Test section of filler on the nose to see how well it will fill larger gaps, it appears to work just fine. |
moostang51 | 03-Jan-08 20:24 | Not only does the magic filler fill gaps. It makes a great build stand. |
poppy | 04-Jan-08 06:15 | Very nice. I love the extra wood, ala DD. Craftsmanship shows all over. |
David Duckett | 04-Jan-08 06:40 | It's looking really good. I've learned that two or more applications of this stuff is better than one with lighter sanding each time. |
poppy | 04-Jan-08 06:59 | My process for balsa coverings: After sealing balsa with 2 coats of dope(important to keep wood from sagging) and a light sand, I use 4-5 coats of Micro-Fill diluted a bit w/water sanding, after dry, lightly btween each. I apply 2 coats of white sanding sealer, again sanding lightly between coats. I then use a thin coat of micro-fill, diluted a bit w/water, and sand again. I use the fill again to correct any flaws, sand, and apply another coat of white sanding sealer. 320 grit sand paper is what I use. I continue this last process until I am satisfied w/finish. |
SteveM | 04-Jan-08 13:57 | Thanks for the information. The whole bird has a second coat of filler that was dried overnight, I will post a picture after having sanded it.
One issue I had after the first coat is that stringers that were too close to allow filler to get between them tended to remain loose and would flex away from the sand paper. Maybe some dope sealer prior to the first coat would have helped stick them together. I don't think I saw any of the balsa sagging (I didn't do any sealing). |
