David Duckett | 25-Mar-15 06:39 | When the covering with silkspan was complete I brushed on two coats of clear nitrate dope and allowed it to dry overnight. The next day I sanded it with 320 wet/dry sandpaper and put on three more coats. The day after it was all sanded again and this is after 5 coats of dope. Running your fingers over the surface is the best way to insure it's all smooth, at least for me cause these old eyes don't see small things easily. The doping process leaves some rough edges on the wings and tail which you can definitely feel. This is after 5 coats of dope. |
BriandKilby | 25-Mar-15 08:19 | dd, can you just sand and dope the filled in balsa or does it need the tissue added for a good affect? |
David Duckett | 25-Mar-15 08:42 | Yes, you can. The recently completed Cutlass was uncovered. The silkspan provides a uniform surface and strengthens the build. Left uncovered it's prone to dings. |
BriandKilby | 25-Mar-15 09:49 | so you sand the silkspan too? |
David Duckett | 25-Mar-15 13:25 | You need to learn to trust me. If I said I sand it, I sand it. It's the exact same procedure I always use, even on open framework covering. Use 320 or 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper and sand lightly. LIGHTLY!!!!!!!!!!! |
