David Duckett | 22-Jun-10 13:48 | Four days worth...It's now ready for the first of two applications of filler. This kit came on the market in 1961 and I'm sure Guillows has sold a ton or two of them. I built one in 1969 and left it covered but unpainted. This kit has a few problems. Some of the formers are very poorly cut relative to the proper outline so make sure they are checked on the plan before being used. It's never made sense to have an instrument panel at the angle built per plans since that would cause incredible glare so I've added wood to bring it perpendicular. (This occurs in several Guillows kits) I don't normally comment on the wood since it's all covered but this kit has a couple of sheets that look almost like raw walnut and are substantially harder than the other wood. Fortunately all die cutting is acceptable. I had planned to use 3/32" stringers instead of the called for 1/16" ones and that was made much easier because most of the notches in the formers needed very little work to accept the larger wood. Thta's good for me but not for anyone who wants to use the smaller wood and even the plans show a larger notch. It's taken four days to get it this far and none of the aforemwntioned problems matter once the shape of the plane emerges. Beautiful lines! |
David Duckett | 22-Jun-10 13:51 | ...aforementioned..... |
Xanadu | 22-Jun-10 14:32 | How about I send the built fuselage of another one, and you make the double body version F-82...... |
David Duckett | 22-Jun-10 14:53 | I thought about that but it has much different fuselages than the P-51. |
