primer or no primer?

Very neat job there Brian - like that model!

Primer just shows mistakes. Skip it.
BriandKilby18-May-16 12:17
thanks bob. thanks for the advice david.

Hate to add confusion, but primer does show mistakes that can be corrected before the final coats of paint. Hate to see that happen again. I understand DD's response as you had a bad experience with primer on the F-5. Hopefully, that experience proved to be a "learning one" and not an "avoiding one." In the end, its your call. The model looks great.

Brian, please see my last postings of S.E. 5 build. Why not play it safe> Just take a couple of hours to construct a "proof of concept" or practice frame work and add the covering, doping, and then the priming? See how it plays out. Rayl and I make practice concepts all the time. -Sky

Brian this covering looks very good. Did you use Esaki tissue or the domestic supplied with the kit? With two coats of dope, I'd recommend using primer for a consistent paint surface. I've had problems painting plastics and having paint removed with masking tape without priming the surfaces first. Looks great so far.

thanks sky and luke, I used the spray can primer and that was the first time I experienced that problem. I think I airbrushed model masters primer on the f-5 and I had know difficulties. I used to airbrush model masters right on the plane with mixed results. usually the dark colors looked fine, but some of the light colors you could see the balsa through. I haven't decided, yet, what to do. luke the tissue was supplied with the kit.

Brian, thanks for sharing with us some of your approaches to using paints, primers, and covering. If there is anyway we can help, just holler. That's what this forum is all about.

Looking really good!

If any help, I only use spray can sandable primer. Some primers are not sandable. Works well for me. Good job on framework and covering!

thank you poppy and Xanadu.

Be very carefull sanding! On full scale, sanding will cut right thru Dacron when sanding on a hard surface ( spar, ribs ). Looks good Brian...
