| Is the density of balsa similar to styrofoam - could that cause you probs? I don't know a thing about styrofoam. Will you do some test pieces before going to the lovely airframe that you have built? |

| I was considering styrofoam because I couldn't find any balsa!
today I found a gas station about ten miles from my home that has a R C store in the back that has all kinds of balsa. Judging from the price stickers he doesn't sell a lot and has had stuff in stock for a long time. |

| If you have access to the blue/pink foam that is used for home insulation in the US, that may be a good option too. It sands about the same as balsa and you can contour it to some very fine shapes, I used it extensively to build fiberglass bucks and forms for my Jaguar project (www.leapingv8s.blogspot.com). It would still need a covering, like tissue, to fill in the voids, but it may be an option. I've never tried it, but I think it would work. |

| This needs a lot more investigating. I have been doing trial sanding and it works pretty good. Next trick it to seal it to see how it takes paint |

| I've used spray insulation to some success. You can tape off areas you don't want the foam to get into (like a cockpit) as long as there are solid walls to stop the foam from spreading. I then use a knife to carve close to the balsa shape and then sand to the balsa. Before adding the foam I've spray painted the balsa so it would stand out from the color of the foam. Also, be sure and use a foam that is closed cell, so there aren't a lot of trapped bubbles. |
