Almost finished, a little touch-up and she's ready for bear.

Now if I can ever find the VF-74 decals, she'll be finished. I learned some lessons, like waiting till I'm finished to decal it, so the panel lines are more subdued and not pulled off with the masking tape as evidenced on the nose. But, other than that, I'm pretty satisfied. My next project is a Guillows P-51 courtesy of DD.

I just looked at the other posts, and find out that Poppy and SteveM are both building P-51's, so I think I'll build the AD Skyraider, also, courtesy of DD. I don't think I can compete with Poppy and Steve.

Fill in the numbers and star with paint. It will be better than it is now. This photo shows the rockets in perfect focus.

SW I did not know that this was a competition. I have always thought it was a collective model making class where we all help each other. Build something out of wood!
sweetwillie29-Mar-08 19:26
Well, John O, the Skyraider is a Guillows kit. And, it happens to be made of wood.

I didn't mean to imply that I was going to be building the P-51 right away. In fact, I have till the end of October to finish and fly it for the 2008 G Challenge. It sounds like Poppy will toss out everything but the directions and even those will get an overhaul. Per the rules I must stick to the outline of the plans (stab can be increased 20%) and must use the kit canopy. I will also be building it light and will power it with an electric motor. Even though we all have the same kit, there is no comparison in the results and we shouldn't just leave our churches unpainted simply because we feel we can't compete with Michelangelo. I encourage you to consider joining the 2008 G Challenge with the P-51.

Sw...I am not as skilled as many here regarding models of planes. Go for the wood. Feel the build! Make the sawdust, not simply glue fuse L to fuse R!

Sweetwillie, I'm looking forward to seeing your skyraider build. Did you know that pilots in their skyraiders actully had gun kills against migs in Veit Nam.

Yes, Barney, I was aboard the USS Oriskany, for two cruises to the Gulf of Tonkin, at Yankee Station. I worked on the flight deck, and the Skyraider was one of the birds that I serviced. they can carry more bombs than a B-17 and go straight up for a distance with that bomb load. It was quite a remarkable aircraft.

John, my Mustang is the 900 series, anyway. And I'm not as skilled with wood as you guys. I can't cut two pieces that are identical. I think it's my eyes.I cut four wing tip pieces to laminate to make a wing tip, and you couldn't tell that they were from the same pattern. I can't sand a square corner, but I keep trying. I look at the wood models that I've done and it saddens me because they don't come out like I wanted them to. But, when I do plastic, I'm pleased with the results. But, like I said, I'm not giving up. I'm trying again. Don't give up on me!

Sweetwillie, Keep trying and take it slow, look at me I've been working on my P-40 for over 20 weeks now, with many trials and errors. The main thing is that you enjoy what you are doing and gain some satisfaction from it.
