rayl | 07-Feb-16 12:51 | SO, I make the two hour trip to Sioux Falls yesterday to take the wife to a Mall and I can visit the one Hobby Shop that is still open within a 150 mile radius. TUrns out that there is nice young guy managing it now but when I pointed out that he was out of Nitrate Dope, he wanted to know if that was a brand name or the name of it's manufacturer (sigh). We are truly dinosaurs. At least Drodak & Sig are still around. |
Skyediamonds1985 | 07-Feb-16 14:01 | You can still use Butyrate dope as well as Nitrate. I've used both with success. To me, anyway, doesn't make much difference; dope is dope. If all else fails, you can order online. I know its a hassle, but: as you said, SIG is still around: SIG mfg. co. is in Montezuma, Iowa, 50171. Its just that you cannot mix the two together. Crazy as it sounds, (Correct me on this) you can add your first coat of Butyrate dope, then when the Butyrate dope completely dries, the succeeding coats can be Nitrate on top. But you cannot add do the reverse, that is: first coat be Nitrate and then add Butyrate on top. |
Skyediamonds1985 | 07-Feb-16 14:55 | Nice to know that my 70-mile round-trip to the "local hobby" store pales by comparison to your trip. I live in Reno, but the hobby store is in Carson City. There are a couple of "hobby stores" in Reno, but they're geared to R/C cars and four-wheel off road "toys" (my humble opinion). |
David Duckett | 09-Feb-16 04:41 | RE dopes: Sky's statement is wrong. Nitrate is used for prep work and butyrate for finish. The dopes are not the same. You can easily find complete info on the SIG website, sig.com. You CAN use either for covering but butyrate shrinks more. |
pfinn | 09-Feb-16 08:50 | Butyrate is fuel proof. Nitrate is not.You can apply Butyrate over Nitrate, but not Nitrate over Butyrate. |
