I’ve been having trouble when I sand primer over spackel…the sandpaper cuts through and gouges the spackel ! I switched to regular “hard” filler and that seemed to do the trick . So..hard filler from now after priming.

That's interesting Mark! I have the same problem with spackle (too course} - What is "regular "hard filler?

2 questions: What kind of primer are you using and what grade sandpaper? I use a sandable auto primer and usually 220 grade at this point, but occasionally the same problem crops up.

Regular sandpaper is made on stiff paper. Wet/dry sandpaper is made on a more flexible paper. The advantage is that wet/dry lessens your chances of getting a crease in the paper and it’s the crease that gouges into the filler. The direction of sanding also affects the outcome.

Very good advice from David there - I always use wet-n-dry for any "finishing" work, once the main contours are done.
