I have been commissioned by Bob Kaye, son of the pilot of Night Prowler, to build his B-29 kit in the markings of his Father's plane.

Cool!

A well written article DD on the B-29. Carry on DD, there is a Lancaster and a B-29 to be finished.
David Duckett30-Mar-12 07:56
I don't normally start a kit until one is finished but the Lancaster is to the point that it CAN be finished so it can sit for awhile. This is the third time building the B-29 and this time I'll build it with the infill system rather than the doubled stringers on this one. That will include the wings, as well. This thing will weigh a ton and god only knows how much weight will be required to get it to sit level...Good thing it's getting warm cause when it comes time to dope it, well you know. And if you thought the rain forest was in peril before, well, start saving balsa.:-)

Ooohhh, a commissioned project, he picked the right guy to build it.
David Duckett30-Mar-12 08:39
Thanks, Steve. You were right. There should be two D's and one E. This particular kit has two E sheets and the only part actually needed is the wing tip. I had to make the side longerons for one side.

315th Bomb Wing 331st Bomb Group Boeing B-29B Superfortress "Night Prowler" serial number 42-63612 Call Sign: SLICKER 42 Jesse O. Williams, Andrew L. Kaye and their crew were assigned Boeing B-29B Superfortress serial number 42-63612. They nicknamed her Night Prowler and painted a black panther about to pounce from an 8-ball.

Dave, will you do an aluminum finish, or overall gray?
David Duckett30-Mar-12 12:10
This is gray with silver mixed in. In full light the finish has a "satin" appearance and the mettalic content can be seen so it's shinier than gray but nowhere near real aluminum. Top Flite rattle can aluminum gives a nice effect but I'll stay with acrylic.

Suprised there are any of those Guillow's kits still out there. Enjoy your build of #3.
hjlittman30-Mar-12 17:45
I saw one, converted to R/C, that was painstakingly covered with aluminum leaf in panels to match the real panel lines. since each piece of leaf was burnished separately when applied, and had a slightly different shine, the effect was extremely realistic.

What? Your letting the Lancaster sit off to the side........
moostang5130-Mar-12 18:08
An honor DD, truly an honor. Will try to check in more often now for updates.
Xanadu30-Mar-12 21:53
Just read the entire story, quite the deal.
David Duckett30-Mar-12 22:21
There's more...I'll share when I have the facts.
SteveM31-Mar-12 00:33
Sounds like you are past the issues with the D and E sheets, but I'll scan or photograph the correct D and E sheets so you have a reference to see what you have double of and what you have been shorted (eg. S12).
