First coat of Gesso. Starting wings while it dries.

Hmmm. Smeared filler all over it and it looks the same.

isn't that an incredible fuselage...especially for the year in which it was conceived and designed. Looks good, Don - just keep filling and sanding until it looks the way you want it to look. The rest of the build will be a picnic compared to what you've already done

I keep thinking Defense could just scale it down 15-20% or so, make it a single seat fleet defender using current engines and avionics (no need for a RIO with state of the art avs) and have one hell of a viper/multi-role aggressor already tested and true for sea duty

Heywoood, Thanks. It is just wonderful. I'm enjoying this on a lot and you are right, I have the left wing ready for the top sheeting. After the fuselage, it's easy. We'll see how the sanding goes. :)

Compared with the Panther, this looks like something from Star Wars :-). Go sand, young man!!
Don C11-Sep-18 15:39
That is true. And I am and am and am.

I just sanded for 2+ hours. I'm tired and it looks the same. :(

That's a good indication that the gesso is doing what it's supposed to but looks is not the objective here. How does it feel?
Don C12-Sep-18 12:47
After going over it again this morning with 200 grit it feels pretty smooth. The problem is that it doesn't look smooth. So, more gesso or more filler? I'm not sure I get this process.
David Duckett12-Sep-18 13:17
I suggest more filler. The gesso is only supposed to fill all the cracks. On the canopy of the panther I put on two coats of gesso and then three of filler. It was more difficult to sand than I thought but I used 220 wet/dry until it smoothed out. I then sanded with 320 and that resulted in a very slick surface. Acrylic paint was then applied and after a couple of coats it starts to shine. On close inspection it seems I should have sanded with 400 also to get an even smoother finish.

Thanks, DD. Other than 2 coats of gesso right away, that's my sequence too. I was having a hard time seeing where it was of, so I took a step from Poppy. A coat of sandable primer. After sanding with 220 I could see where the problems were and added more filler. Next picture.
