A visitor to the Guillows web site will find this as the current Picture of the Month. ;-)

way to go dd, my fokker triplane made the list too.

Good man!

And well it should be.

It doesn't quite work that way. I've sent photos of every Guillows model I've made over the past 5 1/2 years and this is the third one to make it. Many times the selected model is not up to the standards that you and I set for ourselves, IMO, but they seem to be selected to show the wide range of people building their kits and the many variations that are done with them, not necessarily the best made. Then too, it does say "Picture of the month" and not "Model of the Month". I have seen other than a Guillows model in the scroll a couple of times and Mark said he was aware of it but liked the model anyway. Regardless, it's his call. Here in Tucson, as in many other places, juried art competitions are held and usually the jury consists of one person. And while many works will be selected for the show, only one will be judged "Best in Show" and all the other artists will console themselves with the idea that had there been another opinion, they would have won.

I don't plan to build anymore Guillows kits until the two new ones arrive on the market. The current Skyraider and the next will keep me busy for quite awhile.

Absolutely Beautiful, very clean and sharp looking!! I agree with John about Guillows.
David Duckett25-Apr-11 07:59
There are many who agree with John, including me.

David, do you have any interest in building one of Guillow's new laser-cut 400-series kits? It would be a pleasure to see what you could do with a Spitfire, Bf 109, or a Zero, though I realize you've already built variations of these in the past.

Brian - How are you doing with the Mosquito? A model Guillow's needs to bring back.
David Duckett25-Apr-11 08:58
The short answer is no. I have built the Spitfire, although not lately, the P-40, and the Mustang (twice). The BF-109 is not a pretty plane to me and several folks have pointed out that the scale on it is not correct. I do like the Zero and FW-190 but I have built a larger 190 and I really don't like the canopy in the Zero kit. I've built the Wright Flyer and the laser cut version of the Fokker Triplane and I just happen to have an old kit of it. The difference is amazing so I would imagine that the new laser cut versions will be the same. It's not only that the parts are correctly cut, something not always found on their die cut parts, but that everything fits as it should because of it.

Dfell, the Mosquito is still in its box on my shelf, along with the P-39 and others, awaiting the day that I've built the requisite skill and nerve to tackle those (potentially) great-looking models. I've made some modest progress on my P-47, and I'll make it a point to post some pictures soon. Mr. Duckett, I understand your point completely - I love the Guillow's kits, but they do have their flaws, even in the laser-cut versions. I haven't tried a Dumas kit, but I understand they have some distinct weaknesses too, especially in the quality of their plans, and to me, they don't "look" very scale. As Mr. Oshust points out, the AerodromeRC kits look to be of high quality.

Two weeks later, there's a new Picture of the Month! Seems a bit odd, the previous photo was up for nearly two months. So much for the "coveted" title. It is good, however, to see photos from other members of this site in the scroll.

Your Guillow 24" SE5a you made in 2011 is so superb - that striking color scheme of tones and tints and shades of the hues is quite eye-catching and especially soothing - all at the same time! It has always been on my mind. I plan to emulate and mimic that color scheme on a future model. A happy belated birthday, David.
