danrc | 19-Jun-08 09:32 | It is a tricky plane to get into the air, that's true. I had a couple pseudo flights before this one. Each was truncated for a couple reasons. 1) This plane needs a shim put on the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer to increase downward pressure, otherwise it will porpoise (this led to a cracked cabane on flight #1) 2) Thrust is essential but don't over-do it on the prop size. I had an 8x4 sf prop on a welgard 2204 motor but it made the plane's responsiveness a little soggy, so I put it down. This again led to a cracked cabane and landing gear assembly. I replaced the landing gear with a wire system that I can remove and sized down my prop.
The next flight was the one you see here. Take your time with this build, there are a few folks out there that should take all the credit, I just followed in their footsteps. |

You may be amused by this, I did not resize the rudder and I tend to fly without it on all of my models, this one included. With my pull/pull ailerons I get a considerable amount of throw, which I cut down to around 70%, but may still need to cut a little more off. I don't know if you can see, but I added some length onto the ailerons but did not build them up as I probably should have. I noticed a little bit of a 'knife edge' on left hand turns but that was due to a sagging aileron control line that I remedied after the flight. I'm embarassed to say that I don't know the AUW. I'll check that this evening. I was going off of assumed numbers for the airframe with litefilm (?), engine (21 grams), 3 servos (5g each) and esc -7grams. The engine is from grayson hobby. It tows my micro telemaster and my brother's glider around with authority and it is closer to a Park 300 than a 250 in output and thrust. I flew most of the time at around 1/2 to 2/3 throttle. It climbs very well at that rate.
I was amused that this plane soared as much as it does as well. My landing was unbelievably smooth. |

That's all good information for me, thanks Dan. I need to get mine up there again. How big was your shim under the elevator leading edge? |
danrc | 19-Jun-08 11:23 | Sorry about the Dupes, my fault.
I put a small 1/32 spar under the leading edge, however I think it came out to closer to 1/16 after the glue set a little funny. If you weren't experiencing ballooning or seeing the need for excessive downtrim then you should be fine. |
