Even though it lacks floats, (probably and Air Force thing) that is a darn nice job David. Another one you can be proud of. |

Thanks, Don. My interest in building this plane is strictly for the paint job and wheels. There are many folks who think a Beaver just isn't a Beaver without floats. I am not one of those. This is a USAF DHC U-6A. |

What Don C said. A outstanding build non the less. +1 |

So it IS an Air Force thing. It's still a Beaver, just not amphibious. What were they used for by the AF? |

Looks great. I particularly like the spinner, and it's a great paint scheme. |

Thanks for the kind words:-) Don, its "U" designation stands for utility so I guess it was used for whatever it was needed for. There are strap on skis in the reference photo and that plus the color suggest it was a northern aircraft. |

A friend who was involved with the construction of LS 85, the site that was over run in Laos in 1968, said he was shot at while flying in a U-6A to the site. That means that they were used in much the same way as the Pilatus Porter and probably because of their STOL abilities. |

Great job,David! Best static Guillow's Beaver I've seen so far, and I've seen a lot of them. |

Thank you, Howard. :-) You did an incredible job of designing it. The windshield fit nearly perfectly, and would have but for me, and those paper pieces around the landing gear struts were a breeze. A real fun build!! |

Don, the Air Force use to have amphibians. They flew PBY Catalinas during WW2 and afterwards, primarily for air/sea rescues. During the Korean War they also had some boats, similar to PT boats for the same reason. |

Just so you guys know, living in northern Minnesota most of my life, I have actually never seen a Beaver not on floats. |
David Duckett | 28-May-15 19:17 |
I've never seen a plane on floats. |

I think we've been deprived. |
David Duckett | 29-May-15 18:34 |
"Hey! I'm depraved on account I'm deprived." From the song Officer Krupke, West Side Story." :-) |
Don C | 29-May-15 20:47 |
Yes indeed!" Gee Officer Krumpke, krump you!" |
Don C | 29-May-15 20:48 |
All this levity aside, that is one beautiful model DD. |

Thank you. If it will make you feel better, there actually is an Air Force version on floats! :-) Howard has commented, in the Guillows forum, that the kit was designed with floats as an option because so many people think of it that way. I've never seen one in person but I have seen the image of this version since I was a teen ager, albeit not in color, and that Berkeley kit still comes up on ebay sometimes. At about $250!!! |
