I have to ask, why did you chose to modify the vertical stab to fit the plank elevator rather than do a cut-out in the elevator? Is it just easier that way?...inquiring minds want to know. I'm already planning a red, white and black scheme for mine. :-) |

droid | 05-Jul-08 00:17 | yeah - I guess if I had to do it again I would follow conventional wisdom and leave the vertical stab alone and cut out the elevator... the horizontal stabilizer just looked so nice, and I did not feel like chopping it up ! looking back it was an odd decision - it is not easier this way. Once the lipos arrive it will be up and away, my older Kokam 600mAh can not handle the load of the motor. I would also use carbon push-rods like my DR-1 to keep the tail lighter. I did replace the steel skid with a simple carbon rod in this revision.
I can see red white and black looking very stylish for such a classic plane ! look forward to seeing your (mleduc) plane posted as well. |
droid | 12-Jul-08 22:07 | Well it flew for the first time today after the engine swap, and what a difference ! It has no problem taking off (unlike my DR1) and climbs almost straight up at full throttle. It cruises at 33% throttle and at that rate should last ~10 minutes in the FlightPower 350 2 cell. At 50% throttle it lasts in a test case (on the ground) for 6 minutes with enough reserve to land. The engine and prop act as a brake (no engine brake, prop just free-running) without throttle, and if you want to glide this one you will need a folding prop. Control surfaces move ~30 degrees (+/-) and this provides very good control, it turns on a dime and loops just fine. Landings are easy at low throttle. C.G. is at 50% of the chord, which is ahead of the recommended point (!). This plane is great for park flying and in your front yard. |
