What happened with this one, Steve?
SteveM, Comment for image # 1639515 Feb 10 08:27
Yes, I believe you're right. They'd look much better if the sun was out and they were open, but they still bring a bit of cheer to the yard.

They look very much like the Snow Drops we'd see in England.

I don't know what they are, but if I can found out I'll let you all know.

Look like a bunch of chandelier light bulbs...... Nice, what are they?
David Duckett, Comment for image # 1639514 Feb 10 13:24
Nor me. either. These are gorgeous. What are they?

So far you guys haven't convinced me to move to TX or the east coast.

A thin coat of Liquitex gray as a primer adds 0.1oz. I think from here I'll jump right into the final colors rather than add another coat of primer.

Why thank you David, I sure do like the slow and easy pace of silkspan and UHU glue sticks. The Dragon kit looks top notch to me, maybe it'll leave a more favorable impression than the Dumas Corsair did. James, I think I'll just live with the weight, I'm sure it'll still be a floater like the Tyro was before I crashed it 30 times.

Ah, I take back my comment about moving to pull-pull... :) Looks super clean. Can't wait to see it painted.

Looking great, Steve. 8.1oz does not sound bad at all to me. Maybe move to pull-pull linkages for the elevator and rudder, that'd save a bit of weight. How about removing that plastic casing on that receiver too?
David Duckett, Comment for image # 1612326 Jan 10 22:35
Glad to see the Dragon has arrived. That's some pretty fancy covering at the tail!
SteveM, Image # 1612326 Jan 10 22:11

Pushrods are installed, waiting for the tailfeathers glue to dry, and the elevator to straighten out.

Thanks Steve. Phil

GWS prop, EP-9070X3, available just about anywhere including bphobbies.com. The retarder is made by SIG and helps the dope to flow better and dry more slowly. I want to say it also helps prevent shrinkage over time, but I could be remembering that wrong and the nitrate dope shrinks less anyways.

Beautiful workmanship. May I ask which propeller that is? Retarder? Is that the "Banana oil" I hear about? If not, what the heck is, or where do you get, "B.O." ;o)

The Hellcat is getting a little portly. Recovering the fuselage in silkspan and two layers of thinned nitrate dope on everything added about 0.2 oz., the tailfeather push rods add another 0.2 oz. or so. The only thing missing from this picture is paint. This is the first plane that I have treated with nitrate dope. In fact, it was a mix of 50% nitrate dope, 25% thinner, and 25% retarder.

When I sprayed water on the tissue to shrink it not only did it become glaringly obvious that I put the grain the wrong direction on several pieces, but it dried all bubbly and looser than before I got it wet. I've no idea what went wrong, but I'll not be happy till the tissue is off and silkspan on in its place.
SteveM, Image # 1596218 Jan 10 22:31

In an earlier photo I show the weight of the uncovered frame without the radio, landing gear, plastics, and a tiny part of the fuselage was 5.6oz. Here we are at 7.73oz. covered in domestic tissue and silkspan with everything except paint and the linkages to the tailfeathers. I wonder what I did with the linkages? I guess AUW will be on the plus side of 8oz. which is on the heavy end of the expect 7-8oz. listed in the instructions.

James, the motor is a 12mm Feigao 1208436 in a 5.86:1 gearbox. Both were purchased from BP Hobbies but are now both out of stock. For the DH-89 I'm thinking to also use 12mm inrunners and a suitably geared gearbox.
