Yes, thanks for this Dale. Very interesting. Can't wait to see it fly. A lot of these scaled replicas don't look very good, but this one really does!

Glad you enjoyed this post. Wingspan on this BIG model is 34 ft. 7". He began this build about 13 years ago.

Only a half hour from me. Spent two hours talking to this builder and looking over this amazing project. For us builders, that is a Guillow's B-17 model hanging from the ceiling in the corner over this BIG model.

Here's a REALLY big "model" of a B-17. The world famous Bally Bomber. One mans obsession to build 1/3 scale B-17 which he intends to actually sit in and fly! Check out the website: http://theballybomber.com/

The Bally Bomber in it's hanger in Dixon, IL awaiting final completion. Scheduled first flight is sometime in 2015.

Dale and his son review some of the wooden patterns used to construct the B-17's aluminum ribs

Nice Job and a good deed at the same time!

To blend it all together, the entire plane was sprayed with Krylon satin olive which surprisingly bonded to the MonoKote very well.

Thanks guys for your comments. Had to order new decals from Guillow's to replace old and brittle ones from the kit. Over the years some vacuum form parts were missing or damaged, but was able to replace what was needed from Guillow's.

This is what I’ve been working on for the last few weeks….a Guillow’s B-17, kit 2002, with a 40 inch wingspan. Actually this isn’t my build. A friend started this kit about 15-20 years ago. He built the framework, covered it with olive drab MonoKote, and then became frustrated fitting the vacuum form parts, etc. Four years ago I built a couple model airplanes for him, and then he asked if I wanted to finish the B-17. Since I don’t care for the MonoKote on scale models, or taking over someone else’s build problems, I declined. This Air Force veteran’s health is failing, so when he asked me this year if I would finish the B-17 for him, I decided to do what I could with it, without undoing his work. So here are some pics of the completed plane. He was happy with it, so that made it all worthwhile.
