This thing ever get finished?
|
Luke War, Comment for image # 11581 | 08 Dec 09 14:01 |
Yeah I'd like to finish it. Perhaps that'll be my project once I finish carving the blades for the Flying Pancake while looking for somebody who owns a wood lathe I can use! Thanks for the encouragement! |

This whole class of plane has so-far eluded me in my airplane repertoire, so I was anxious to see how it turned out. Be brave! *G* |

Bill, the Real Sporty project was put on hold due to lack of funding (aka patience) for the front end. It's currently sitting on top of my television to prevent it from floating away. I've been thinking about trying to cover the entire thing in silkspan in an attempt to make the front end look decent. |

What ever happened with this thing? |

The cowl as it sits right now. Tired of sanding and filling so Im taking a break on it for the moment. |

I've also used the expanding foam for insulation. The kind of stuff you get from a hardware store. You can fill the shape (not too much, a dab'll do ya) and once it sets, fill the pores with filler. Sand smooth. You need to use the foam that dries hard. I haven't used the other foam, but I imagine it won't sand very well. |

I used Balsa Filler, wood glue, plastic glue, CA, and more smeared ca. Then filed liked crazy using my wifes nail files. It was suggested I try the Squadron white putty but I could not find any.
Looks great so far - I had considered rounding out the FUse as well but could not find any good photos of the prototype. |

I've been using contour putty from Testors with mixed results. Mainly my problem has been sanding it too early or not enough! |

Be careful with the Bondo it is also exothermic. Start with small amounts. Don't try to put a big gob to fill or the heat may distort the plastic as well. Bondo is a good filler also if the model is for display. Take your time it will work. |

Flyer, Im actually making this model into a display, so weight really isnt an issue. Ive heard the fillers that heat up can melt the plastics and make things into more of a mess than they were before, but Ive never used them so Ive got no first hand experience. I'm thinking i'll give John's bondo method a go. Thanks for the suggestions guys! |

I have been using auto spot filler. Its cheap and readily available to me. I have used Squadron Green but I have no local hobby shop to resupply quickly when needed. |

I believe you are going to make a "flyer" out of this model, No? You might try Evercoat Formula #27 or Akemi fillers. They are both poly-vynil two part fillers that have "structural" qualities for being load bearing and can stand vibration. They are exothermic and heat during curing so start with thin coats and let it cure 30-40 minutes before applying another coat. It looks like you are going to need quite a bit to fill and any filler will add considerable weight. You might give Mr. Oshust's recommendation and build one of balsa. after carving and finishing saw it in half and hollow it out to lighten it up. Just a "thought" |

Im planning on using the glue and fill method on this one John. I was thinking of trying Squadron White Putty, but Im not sure if that'd be my best option. Any thoughts? |

Make a solid one from balsa or glue it up, fill with bondo , and sand. The wheel pants on my Gee Bee were done the latter. |

This cowl is the current bane of my existance. I just had to put it out there. |

Your build is looking great. The cowl on mine is coming along slowly. I agree with you about the flimsy-ness of the wood, I've had to replace a few parts along the way. I also made strip ailerons for easier manipulation for RC flight. |

One wing all done, the other close behind. Anyone need anything hung out to dry? |
Luke War, Image # 10474 | 14 Jan 09 01:59 |
The upper fuse after sheeting. There's a few problems with it, but nothing a bit of filler cant fix! |

Wings waiting for their top sheets. Made scale ailerons from scratch. This build has actually become much more enjoyable than I initially thought it would be as I continue to try new things like modifying it! :) |
