I think all is working again now. Please leave a comment on a photo somewhere if something you need is not working still.

I used HobbyLite Filler - the 'Balsa' specific one...pack it into the wingroot - then sand with a wood dowel (of the proper diameter) wrapped with 100 grit sandpaper. then take it finer as you go - down to 220g - then finish sand it by hand (no dowel)

Hmm, thanks gents! I figured at least a few of you would know, and I was right! Definitely an odd bird.

Yep, definitely a Shackleton.

Avro Shackleton at a guess

My first guess would be Russian but the British have also produced some planes with counter rotating props.

Anyone have a clue what aircraft this is??

Yeah I am going to dig out the old Testor's airbrush that I got years back but never used. I need to rig up some sort of spray booth though...living in an apartment doesnt give me much room to spraypaint in!

Thanks man! I've in fact eyed a few of his planes already. Haha after checking out what others are doing and what's possible I think I really want to try and make my own radial on my next exposed engine project. Definitely going to check out Dare Hobby though...maybe I can put a new engine on my tiny wings!

Check out John Ernst's planes in this site. His method of shadowing on the paper engines makes them really stand out and adds the illusion of depth and dimension. Also, Dare Hobby (darehobby.com) makes vacuum formed radial engines in various diameters.

The trick for any good spray job, either from a can or air brush, is many light coats. That can be harder to control from a spray can, but by spraying from a further distance, that will help. Nice clean work. Herr makes nice kits. That's the basis for my Piper Cub.

Great photo....I love flying engines with tiny wings!

Thanks for the lead, I'll check out his work!

I don't know of one, but I bet most of the chaps on here would suggest making your own. Have a look through John Oshust's archives, he's been known to do a few!

Does anyone know if any company or person makes some kind of vacu-formed radial engine mock up? I'm not really certain what I'm looking for, but there's got to be a better alternative to the paper cut out I have on that was included with the kit!

Hey thanks very much jgood I really appreciate it. :) It's covered with good old tissue paper. Its all I know to use... I initially painted it with a spray coating of white recommended to me by my local hobby shop, but it went on very unevenly and ran badly. After getting over my frustration I went back to the reliable paint and brush and applied many layers of white over the bad spray job, then put on the red over top.
jgood, Comment for image # 984216 Nov 08 10:16
What's it covered with?
jgood, Comment for image # 984216 Nov 08 10:16
Luke, this looks really really good.

This is my first major balsa aircraft built to completion. I learned a lot from building it and hope to use that to make my next project even nicer. The model has its flaws, but I like it. Any constructive criticism or tips are more than welcome! :) Thanks for checking my plane out!

I had some trouble making smooth looking wing fillets. Any suggestions for future models?
