Hi Mike, and welcome to the virtual aerodrome. You can find Poppy's Hellcat by clicking on the "your hangar" under the Main Menu to the left. Click on Poppy's name and photos of all the different models he has contributed to the site will show up. Clicking on any one of those pictures will bring up the entire build thread for that particular model. In some cases there are literally hundreds of photos and if the plane has been built by more than one person, even more. So, I'll click on the Hellcat and...

Actually spackle is a great material. I have been using light weight spackle as a filler for many years and it works perfectly.

Don’t laugh but I used spackle on my P-40, I filled the inside with that spray foam sanded and applied spackle.... it was a lot of work ... but its all about experimenting and trying new things.

so im heading to the hobby store. My list so far is sheets of 1/16 balsa, Then some kind of filler if they make some thats just for balsa models i will pick that up. Think thats it. Do you think 1/16 is good for planking a series 1000 hellcat? anything i am missing please add.. cant even see straight so tired.lol. thanks for your time and advice. Mike.

I sheeted my Harvard with 1/32 balsa sheet. You could use 1/16 as well but remember that you may need to alter the formers etc, measurements so that when you have applied the sheet the model is still the same scale. This is personal choice though. I applied the sheet with a combination of wood glue and CA. For planking my B 24 I'm using scraps that I have collected over time usually 1/16 or 1/8 balsa. As far as filler well I'm a lazy buggar so I use a mormal wood filler that is easy to sand and then to finish I use a plaster board skim coat filler that sands up nice and smooth. Again this is what I do and I have no doubt that others have better ideas. As I said earlier I'm no expert and I learn something every time I log on to this site.

i just googled planking not much came up. What do you think is easier planking or sheeting? And is there any kind of filler or something i need to get? I want to do this for my series 1000 hellcat. What size of balsa sheets do i need to get for both methods. And thanks for info stirling.

Hi Mike. While I'm far from being a expert on covering you could try googling the following: TrimLine, Solite, Solartrim, Solartex. All are film or fabric, iron on or self adhesive. There will be others as well just have a good hunt. Sheeting or planking are two other methods, the later involving more sanding and filling to get a smooth finish. Check out John M Oshust's Dauntless for sheeting and you could also look up my B-24 for planking. One other option if you have the time and don't mind the smell is to use fibreglass. My neighbour has an awesome two meter plus RC P 51 Mustang finished with fibreglass and looks stunning. Hope this helps otherwise I'm sure one of the wise men of this site will help.

I have a question for you guys. What are the other methods for covering? I have a series 1000 hellcat coming and i wanted to try something different instead of all paper. I am still very new to this but have seen some pros on here i think sheeting or cutting pieces and putting them between stringers. Any info welcome. thank you. Mike
