It looks like you could crank her up and go flying. An outstanding model. I love the details and weathering. JFB!!! |

It's a balsa wood filler, wipe it on then sand it off. It may be off the market now - which would be a shame but you can also use Hobby lite which is also a really good filler and it should be available from most hobby stores. |

What exactly is micro-fill, is it just a sealant? I tried searching for it but I couldn't find anything. |

I don't see why not, but you would want to have several coats applied (and sanded lightly between coats) to make sure of an even surface. That rascally balsa has a way of poking its rough surface through in places that previously looked okay. Fine if you want rough but not fine if you want super smooth. |

You think I can just use aero gloss dope to seal and sand before I prime it? |
Roring40, Comment for image # 21266 | 30 Mar 11 13:47 |
Ryan, micro-fill went on over the planking, then primer and paint. I didn't pay too much attention to making it a perfect surface because I wanted some weathering to be applied. If you want a perfect surface I'd suggest using the silkspan or as some of the others have done, perhaps an automotive body filler. I'm going to try the latter on the mossie.
Yes John, fortunately New Zealand is filled with warbird addicts so when we are invaded by Australia our Kittyhawks will one again lead our aerial defence : ) |

Looks real....so New Zealand does have an air force after all! |

Hey Nigel, did you use silkspan or just primer and paint after you filled and sanded? |

Realy great. Congrats on such fantastic work, you've given the rest of us something to aspire to. |

That's the absolute beauty of this site. I blatantly copied the likes of David, John, Rod and Poppy and just adapted some stuff to suit what I was looking for. Before that I knew nothing. I don't doubt that many will be picking up major skills from watching what you are doing - me included. Collectively our knowledge base just gets wider and better. |

I'm still trying to find tv antennae too! |

Thanks for the compliment Nigel but I must admit I'm basing a lot of what I've learned from you and Davids P-40's. Not that I'm trying to copy you guys or anything, I just think of your work as great template. I am however planning on adding some flaps to mine. Thanks for the knowledge on the cockpit. Now I can move forward with building it!!! |

Ryan, according to the really good book I picked up 'Modelling the P-40' the basics of the cockpit sides are the same. Most of the differences are on or with the shape of, the instrument panel. Bonus point to John O for spotting the addition of the muffler bearing cut off switch - not easily detectable. That P-40 you are building is putting mine to shame !!! |

Nice work and I see you included the all important muffler bearing cut off switch! |
RTD89, Comment for image # 17795 | 05 Mar 11 17:45 |
Hey Nigel, do you know if there is any difference between the P-40E and N cockpits? Is there any difference between the side panels inside the cockpit? |

She's a special woman Gary. When I put the P-40 in place she said "oooh a Fokker Triplane would look good up there as well". "mossie first darling" was the response. heh heh |
