Dale, these details of building an aircraft are very helpful to new builders like me, thanks for posting them. Keep up the good work! |

Thanks Dale, I see that also on the kits I have, but it is no accident. These are really built to fly. I just did a Javelin and the body is very fragile, I added gussets, extra cross-members and it still broke in three places when I tissued. Maybe it is my fingers. |

What I didn't like about it was the sheet balsa was very thin. (only aprox. 1/20th" thick). The thinest material that I've worked with on previous models is 1/16th. So it was just too fragile for me.
The width of the thin balsa also didn't match up with the 1/16th square stringers. The fuselage construction was just to lightweight. It was meant to be a flying model, I had to add a lot of additional support structure. |

This is one of the nicest planes I have seen, and it surprises me to see a kit I have never really been interested in look this great. I have one or two 900's in my closet. What didn't you like about the 900's? I like the 3/4 scale warbirds because of the substantial frames, but this is really very very nice. Great job! |

15/11/10 19:31 I was happy with the finished results and glad I made the modifications to the construction of this model. But I don't care to construct another one of the Series 900 builds. |

Extra details added were the wing-pods to carry small rockets, or flares, etc. and the small dual exhaust on the bottom of the engine cowling. |

I decided to paint it as the Air Force Bird-dog. |

Finished up this model today. Added decals, celluloid windows, and painted nose. |

Looking from the left rear. The piece to the right is the material for the observation window that goes on the top wing. It was made from heavy stock paper. |

Papered and assembled. The extra stringers on the fuselage made for a much improved appearance. |

I reinforced the point at which the wings connect to the fuselage. |

Building the fuselage, the parts actually broke in my hands. I modified the construction of the fuselage. |

I decided to try one of the Guillows Series 900 models. When I opened up the kit, I was disappointed to see that the sheet balsa was only 1/20th thickness. Per the stock plans, the construction of the model was very thin and fragile. I doubled the amount of ribs and adding additional spars and stringers to the model. |
