Santa Claus (Leading Aircraftman Fred Fazan from London) hands out presents to Dutch children at Volkel, 13 December 1944.
This is Hawker Tempest Mk.V W2-A (NV700) based at B.70 Volkel Air Base near Uden, Netherlands. (possibly flown by Wing Commander Evan Mackie (DSO, DFC)
Members of No 122 Wing had saved their sweet ration for weeks, and contributed enough money to give the children their first proper Christmas party. It was noted by the photographer that this year Santa was afraid of Messerschmitts, so he decided to come by RAF Tempest!

That's very cool. Great looking little aeroplane! Some of those homebuilt 'replicas' look a bit dodgy, but that is very nicely done. |

iPhone photo after launch. Just a hundred or so winds, but it flew quite well! Will try again with proper rubber (this was the blue rubber band that came with the kit) tomorrow morning, or maybe this evening. Got a nice circuit out of it. |

Charles gives the Typhoon a test glide. Seems to be OK. |

How did I miss this build thread? I am impressed with Charles' gentle hold at such a young age! Welcome to the tree problem part of the country. |

Hi Brian. No, just straight out of the box. Will get a weight for you soon. |

did you have to substitute the stringers with lighter weight balsa, james? |

I've done some test flights into long grass (the lawn!), and it flies really nicely with a small amount of turns (25). Looking forwards to some bigger flights on a calm day. |

One of Charles' favorite books is the Guillow catalogue. He's quite into the Beaver at the moment, so that might have to be bought soon! |

The 'wind issue' is great up here, lots of calm days. The problem now is a 'tree issue', it's quite heavily forested around here. I think there is a field we could use a short drive away though. |

So, where you are living now you can do free-flight. Fun, isn't it? How's the wind issue up there? |
