John Cooper | Dumas Kit #319, Sparrowhawk | Parked | 02-Feb-11 10:31 | | Views : 1684 | The Henschel, without a prop. The plastic Peck prop I was going to use added too much nose weight. I had to build a light balsa prop. |
John Cooper | Dumas Kit #319, Sparrowhawk | Build | 02-Feb-11 10:29 | | Views : 1656 | The flying surfaces are covered with brown domestic tissue that was pre-shrunk on a frame several times. Pre-shrinking is essential for the very flimsy tail and wings. I air brushed the tissue, while still on the frame, again to prevent shrinking. |
John Cooper | Dumas Kit #319, Sparrowhawk | Build | 02-Feb-11 10:25 | | Views : 1501 | The Henschel's decals were printed onto domestic white tissue, using a laser printer. The green background colour comes from the card stock that I used as a backing to hold the tissue as it goes through the printer. |
John Cooper | Dumas Kit #319, Sparrowhawk | Build | 02-Feb-11 10:23 | | Views : 1521 | The Henschel's landing gear. It took some effort to get the wire into the right place and also have the wheels turn smoothly. I really wanted the wheels to turn properly, so that I could get a smooth landing (and possible take-off) on the gym floor. |
John Cooper | Dumas Kit #319, Sparrowhawk | Build | 02-Feb-11 10:19 | | Views : 1527 | For the Henschel's rocker arm covers, I started with a long balsa cylinder that was tear drop shaped in cross section. I then carved and sanded the full shape, while still on the cylinder (using the cylinder as a handle). I then cut off the completed shape and then started another. |

John Cooper | Dumas Kit #319, Sparrowhawk | Build | 01-Feb-11 11:53 | | Views : 1563 | This is a peanut scale (13") Henschel Hs 123. I was a little hesitant to start this model because there were so many difficult pieces to build. These included wheel fairings and cowl with numerous rocker arm blisters. However, the plane oozed so much character that I had to build it. |
John Cooper | Scratch Built Albatros D.II | Flying | 20-Jan-11 08:51 | | Views : 1030 | The Albatros is just about to touch the floor, as it lands smoothly. Most landings of this model aren't so smooth. |
John Cooper | Dumas Kit #305, Curtiss SBD3 Helldiver | Flying | 20-Jan-11 08:48 | | Views : 1435 | The helldiver, climbing, at a good rate, in a tight turn. |
John Cooper | AeroGraphics Kit G340 Fairey Firefly Mk 5 | Parked | 11-Jan-11 11:26 | | Views : 1567 | Not an AeroGraphics model, but a similar sized scratch built version of the Firefly MkII. |
John Cooper | Dare Sopwith Triplane | Parked | 04-Jan-11 14:43 | | Views : 1239 | I covered the triplane with beige coverite microlite. I removed the gloss of the microlite by rubbing it with fine steel wool. |
John Cooper | Dare Sopwith Triplane | Parked | 04-Jan-11 14:39 | | Views : 1202 | The balsa quality and part fit of the kit was very good. Unfortunately the kit does not come with decals, wheels, or any plastic parts such as the engine or machine guns. |
