David Duckett | 09-Apr-08 09:12 | This desert dweller was on the front porch last night when dumbass, aka DD, walked right past it to take out the trash. |
jgood | 09-Apr-08 09:56 | That's quite a snake. Rattler? How's Ernie doing after the encounter?! |
David Duckett | 09-Apr-08 10:29 | He hasn't moved. Course, he didn't move before the encounter, either, so I don't know. (Sorry) I'm pretty sure it's a rattlesnake but what I don't know is which kind because the black and white bands at the tail, dare I say invasion stripes?, seem unusual. There are many different kinds of rattlesnakes, and many other kinds of snakes, that live around here, as well as other critters which we try to avoid because they can be hazardous to one's health and also because they were here first. Snakes do not normally come near the house. Scorpions and Black Widow spiders do and they are not treated as humanely because they get inside the house. |
jgood | 09-Apr-08 12:53 | Hmmm, looks like a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake to me. I can deal with snakes, but spiders and scorpions less so! |
sweetwillie | 09-Apr-08 13:06 | Yep, that looks like a western diamondback to me too. They can give a very nasty, sometimes deadly bite. I'm glad you saw him first. |

SteveM | 09-Apr-08 13:56 | Thankfully they are not usually aggressive. I once walked past one about a foot away from where it was coiled in a hole in some tall grass and was buzzing out a warning. The greenhorn from Oregon had never heard a rattlesnake before and thought it was the wind vibrating the barb wire fence. |
poppy | 09-Apr-08 16:32 | DD, I've seen it all now! You did't paint his tail while he was napping? |
