BugEater | 16-Jan-09 20:46 | First Time Using Balsa As A Covering |
frwyflyer | 17-Jan-09 08:20 | It's looking pretty good. Now comes to fun part of filling and sanding. |
BugEater | 17-Jan-09 12:22 | Speaking of which, as this is my first time, what kind of filler do i want to use? |
frwyflyer | 17-Jan-09 16:38 | There are several fillers on the market. Hobbylite balsa filler and Microfill are a couple of good ones. Make sure all the glue joints are tight. If the balsa flexes when you are sanding it can cause problems. Also use a block with the sandpaper to keep from causing ripples on the surface from uneven pressure from your fingers. Seal the wood with clear lacquer. It may take two or three coats and sand between applications. The balsa will really suck up the lacquer. This will give you nice firm surface to lay on your primer coat of paint. Use 250-300 paper to lightly sand the surface and check any area that need touch up filler. You can use acrylics, dope on top of this surface. Enjoy the journey |
BugEater | 17-Jan-09 18:48 | excellent, thanks so much. It'll take me a while to get it done, college takes front seat to the spit. |
frwyflyer | 17-Jan-09 18:55 | I almost remember those days. Several lifetimes ago. |
BugEater | 17-Jan-09 20:18 | It's a good time, but it keeps you busy. |
