I use a technique that may help you. Instead of putting the tissue on dry, I dampen it by pressing it against a damp paper towel or wash cloth until it is uniformly damp, not wet, then I quickly apply it to the plane, making it as tight as possible. Once the dope sets and the tissue dries, I apply many coats of thinned dope (I like EZ-DOPE) drying each with a hair dryer. The tissue will wrinkle again when I apply the thinned coats, but eventually it will absorb enough dope to where it doesn't wrinkle. That's when I know I have enough coats. it's not fool proof and there have been times when I've had to start over on a section because I couldn't get it tight enough, but the majority of time this works for me. Hope this helps. Don C 10-Nov-21 11:21 May I add a bit different method? You've done such a nice job so far it's a shame to see all this trouble. I use silkspan, it's tougher and can be pulled taut more easily ( I had a tendency to tear tissue while trying to get the wrinkles out), and dope. First I wet the silk span with a spray bottle, then apply dope to the outer edges only and lay the silkspan on, like Ed said making it as tight as possible (sometimes a little more dope is needed if the edges dry too quickly) pulling all the wrinkles out. Then let it dry. If it's good, coat it with dope and let it dry again. I do use nitrate airplane dope thinned 50/50.I see two things in common - pre wetting and drying with just the tissue before coating. I've not tried EZ-Dope, but the method sounds the same.
