Woke to a cackling coven of crows right outside my doorstep this morn. Looked up in the tree and...

I hate to picky but it was a murder of crows. Nice photo of the hawk. Any idea why it stood still for the picture?

Yes, you're right. I guess I got old "Crows" and "Witches" mixed up. Don't know why. It was there for about 4-5 min. before it decided to make a dash for it. 30-50 crows were all silently waiting. A bit eerie, after all the ruckus.

I don't understand. Is a group of crows referred to as a "murder of crows" or is something else meant here? Were the crows waiting to attack the hawk? ??

Yes DD a group of crows is called a murder of crows, just like a group of lions is known as a pride of lions. I meant to ask if there was a obvious reason that the hawk was hanging out, normally if you get close enough to take this nice a photo the bird is long gone, maybe a special lens on the camera?

No special lens. The local crow faction here abouts (lots and lots) are nesting already (seen em' gathering prime building materials of late). They're getting very protective around their nesting sites I believe. 'Cause them little baby crows sure make some tasty snacks! Fun to watch the crows go after the hawks. Makes you feel sorry for the hawks. The hawks around here are quite familiar with humans so I don't think he thought I was a big concern at the moment. 20 ft. away at 45 deg. above horizon.
