whats the dope for?
Barnstormer17-Apr-08 19:13
I suspect that when Steve does the vacuum forming of the canopies it helps to protect the balsa and also preserves the forms for later use.

Barnstormer is correct, it protects the soft wood and also gives me something to sand till it is very smooth. But this time around the dope was sticking to the canopy and ruining it. I have since learned dope cannot handle the heat well and I should be using Finishing Resin instead.

That make sense Steve, the finishing resin must be an epoxy or a urethane base, of when activated and hardened would not react to mild heat during the vacuum forming process like the nitrate dope would.

BS - The finishing resin arrived today. It doesn't say if it is epoxy or urethane based, just that it contains polyester resins and styrene monomers.
