Go John!!!

I didn't know T-6's had machine guns on them!
JohnG.03-Nov-07 14:14
No MG's...tho the stick has a button. Think you are looking at the exhaust. MG's in Polish hands could be devistating!!!

What that on top of the cowling (above the 227) then, John?

Looks like a .30 cal. to me.
moostang5103-Nov-07 18:09
Ditto. One single fixed .30 cal I believe. How was the flight?
JohnG.03-Nov-07 18:27
Yeah...well thats the problem with being Polish...sometimes you can't see your nose for your face. I was so excited to fly again I never even noticed. But, for sure, no crosshair sight in the cockpit. Full aerobatics with me on the stick and rudder pedals......FANTASTIC~!!!

A single .30 cal maching gun on a T-6 could be devistating in American hands too. Late in 1943, one pilot was in advanced training just before converting to P-47's. He was taking an armed T-6 out to the Gulf for gunnery practice when, flying a little lower than regs allowed just as he was crossing the bayou, he heard a pitter patter noise on the bottom of the wing. He banked sharpely and saw "some idiot" down in a duck boat on the bayou who had just taken a pot shot at him and scored a hit. He decided to return the favor and made a pass at the boat with the .30, opening up far enough short that the guy in the boat had time to jump in the bayou before the boat was cut in half. Unfortunately for the pilot, the "idiot" in the boat was a local politician who made a few phone calls and the next morning, the pilot was demoted and was in bombardier school. Fortunately, his later conduct offset this minor glitch in his service record and he eventually retired from the Air Force as a brigader general. Not just a story, this disciplinary action is listed on the web.
